Staple vs. Statement Pieces
Do you know the difference between your staple and statement pieces? Find Here: What they are, why they're important, and five basics you need in your closet (no matter your personal style).
So, you decided to build the wardrobe of your dreams (AKA a capsule wardrobe). The only issue is… you don’t know where to get started.
A capsule wardrobe is a strategically curated collection of clothing that can be worn multiple ways for a variety of events. The foundations that allow for this versatility and functionality are your staple and statement pieces; the rest is just wardrobe clutter. (Wardrobe clutter is anything that doesn’t align with your personal style; more on that in next week’s newsletter.)
Knowing the difference between a staple and statement piece will help you not only identify them in your own closet, allowing for better distinction between capsule pieces and wardrobe clutter. But also, help you approach your closet with a fresh mindset as to how the clothes can be utilized.
Pro Tip: Everyone’s personal style is different and may result in different staple and statement pieces accordingly. It’s important to think guidelines, not rules.
Staple Pieces:
Clothing staples are versatile pieces that can be worn different ways for multiple occasions. These are going to be the items you wear daily and find yourself reaching for most often.
You can identify your personal staple pieces by paying attention to what you wear most often and typically, your favorite pieces that you don’t mind outfit repeating.
Statement Pieces:
Statement pieces are any pieces (clothing or accessory) that stands out and draws attention. Not every day is a statement piece day (and that’s okay); your statement pieces will be what you use to accessorize and elevate your looks for those GNO’s, date nights, & cute errand days.
You can identify your statement pieces by focusing on how you prefer to accessorize. This could be chunky jewelry, a bright color or patterned shirt, or purse that defines your personal style.
Now that you’ve identified your staple and statement pieces (& removed any wardrobe clutter), here are five basics to make sure you have in your closet:
(1) Plain White Tee
(2) White Button Down
(3) Good Fitting Jeans
(4) Black Dress
(5) Blazer
Remember: clothing staples never go out of style; that’s what makes them staples. Quality is more important than quantity so be sure to choose well and invest accordingly.
