Applying texture to your outfit is one of the simplest ways to enhance perception of quality of the garments, add dimension to your look, and unique character to your style.
There is no right or wrong way to mix textures. The best recommendation is to know the different textures, and then look in your wardrobe and try different combinations for different occasions to see what you like best; this also provides an opportunity to see what textures may be missing from your wardrobe.
You are most likely already mixing textures without knowing it, but intentionally pairing certain textures can determine a focus for the style.
Types of Textures:
Denim
Broadcloth
Corduroy
Leather
Suede
Brocade
Silk/Satin
Cashmere
Flannel
Cotton
Lace
Cable Knit
Linen
Texture Combinations
Silk & Denim
Corduroy & Cable Knit
Leather & Linen
Silk & Cotton
Denim & Lace
And so on….
When learning to pair different textures, don’t be afraid to take some risk. Again, there is no right or wrong way. Here are a few tips to get started:
Start small.
If textures make you nervous, start with mixing patterns and/or colors you’ve never thought to pair together. From there, see if you could potentially swap a texture in.
Stick with a color palette.
Start by trying with colors you like and experiment with what you already have. Be sure to keep a list.
Remember to balance proportions.
If you’re struggling on where to apply texture, start with layering and proportioning. Weather it’s silk under a cropped leather jacket or oversized denim with a little lace, play with your layers.
