Mastering Measurements
Shopping online but don't know your measurements? Here's your guide to help you order the right size the first time.
Do you prefer to shop online but never know if you’re ordering the right size? Well, look no further because I’m about to simplify the measuring process.
What you’ll need:
A Flexible Tape Measure
A Mirror
Optional:
A friend to help with the hard-to-reach spots.
Measuring for a Bra
Band Size:
Wrap the tape measure snugly around your ribcage, just under your bust.
Round to the nearest whole number. If it's odd, add 1 inch to get an even number (most band sizes are even).
Example: If your measurement is 31 inches, your band size is 32.
Bust Size:
Measure around the fullest part of your bust, keeping the tape straight and not too tight.
Round to the nearest whole number.
Cup Size:
Subtract your band size from your bust size. Use the difference to determine your cup size:
0 = AA, 1 = A, 2 = B, 3 = C, 4 = D, and so on.
Example: If your bust is 36 inches and your band is 32, the difference is 4 (D cup).
Measuring for Shirts
Neck:
Wrap the tape around the base of your neck, leaving a small gap for comfort.
Round up to the nearest half-inch.
Chest/Bust:
Measure around the fullest part of your chest, under the armpits.
Shoulders:
Measure from one shoulder's end to the other, across your back.
Sleeve Length:
Start from the middle of the back of your neck, over your shoulder, and down to your wrist.
Waist (if the shirt is fitted):
Measure at the narrowest part of your torso, typically above the belly button.
Measuring for Pants
Waist:
Measure around your natural waistline (usually the narrowest part of your torso).
Keep the tape slightly loose for comfort.
Hips:
Measure the fullest part of your hips, ensuring the tape is level all the way around.
Inseam:
Measure from the crotch seam down to the bottom of your leg (or where you want the pants to end).
Out-seam:
Measure from your natural waistline to the desired pant length (e.g., ankle or floor).
Rise:
Measure from the crotch seam to the top of the waistband for low, mid, or high-rise styles.
Additional Tips:
Measure to your skin or wear fitted clothing for the most accurate measurement.
Avoid pulling the tape too tight; it should rest comfortably against your body.
Double-check measurements, especially if ordering online or tailoring.
