We’ve all been there. We hate everything in our wardrobe, can’t find anything that we like, and want to get rid of everything and start completely over.
Good news, you can. Better news? You don’t need to get rid of everything to do so and spend a billion $$$.
Everyone goes through lifestyle & personal style changes in their lifetime; it’s inevitable as your seasons of life change, your needs and likes are also to change. You’re not going to want to wear the same bodysuits you wore in college when you’re a mother of three going to the family picnic 20 years later; get it?
If you feel like it may be time to start your wardrobe over (3 Signs it’s Time to Build a Capsule Wardrobe Here), don’t feel bad about it; it’s extremely normal and an exciting opportunity to reevaluate how you present yourself.
NEWS FLASH: your wardrobe shouldn’t cause you stress; so, it’s just about taking the stress out of it.
3 THINGS TO DO if you want to start your wardrobe over
Identify Your Personal Style. If you want to get serious about a wardrobe you love, go through your closet and get rid of the sh*t you don’t wear. I know it’s there; you know it’s there… just get rid of it. If you don’t wear it/ don’t like it/ doesn’t fit the vibe of what you’re looking for, it’s not for you. Something else will be able to fill that space and odds are, we can fill it with something you will wear 10x more. (Trust the process.) Best way to get clear on your personal style is creating a mood board, I recommend Pinterest/Canva, but you can use any media. Let the inspiration flow and pin any outfit you can (realistically) see yourself wearing based on your style preferences AND your current lifestyle.
Do The Math. Like a perfect outfit plays on proportions, a good wardrobe is well balanced. If you’re wardrobe has too many staple pieces, you may feel it lacks excitement and get bored repeating simple pieces. If your wardrobe has too many statement pieces, you may find it hard to dress for your daily life. A good wardrobe balances the two so that there are plenty options for both a casual work week and a wild weekend away. You can do this by itemizing your clothes to see how many staple pieces & statement pieces you have; sometimes the clothes aren’t the issue- it’s the proportions between staple and statement pieces.
Keep It Clean. As you go through the process to rebuild your wardrobe after auditing your existing clothes and analyzing its makeup, it’s critical to find an organization process that works for you. This can look a lot of different ways for everyone but find a system that works for you and stick to it. As you add to your wardrobe, you want to not only be able to find a home for them in your closet but also ensure you’re not buying duplicate pieces. It’s easier to make conscious, strategic purchases when you can physically see what you need. Also, it makes it so much easier to shop your closet on the days your tempted to head out to the store.
